As if winter driving isn’t enough to stress about, this time of year can wreak havoc on your heels, too! Between the cold temperatures outside, and the dry air inside, heels can easily become dried out, cracked, and sore. Also known as heel fissures, dry, cracked heels, can be painful and can even become infected. On top of all that, during the winter we tend to take hotter showers and baths in attempts to warm up from our frigid Bloomington weather, and this only adds to the problem! Luckily, there are steps you can take to keep your heels moisturized and happy at home.
Step 1: Try to use warm water when you bathe, rather than hot.
Step 2: Be sure to use a gentle, mild soap that won’t strip your skin of moisture.
Step 3: Moisturize! Invest in a foot cream and apply after bathing. You can also try slathering on some petroleum jelly then slipping on socks before bed, and letting this combo work its magic while you sleep!
Step 4: Use a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air inside.
Step 5: Drink plenty of water throughout your day to ensure that you (and your skin) stay hydrated.
Step 6: Raid your pantry. Eat a diet rich in Vitamin E, soak your feet in an oatmeal bath, and treat your heels to a mashed banana mask!
