While I was home sick with the dreaded strep throat, I had the opportunity to watch some daytime T.V. Most of it reminded me why I love being at HFAA (it was boring!) but I did get to watch Kelly and Michael on Wednesday. I learned two very important things from the episode. The first is all about Mark Counselos and his pneumatic walking boot and the second…just stay tuned for my next post!
As any foot doctor can attest, I love looking at feet. So when Mark went cruising up to his wife Kelly Ripa in a scooter with a pneumatic walking boot on his right foot, I was immediately intrigued. Upon further investigation (aka Google) I discovered that Mark had surgery on January 15, 2013 in his big toe joint. It apparently stemmed from an old soccer injury.
With those details, it sounds like he may have had some arthritis and pain in that joint and had it corrected in January. He is currently non-weight bearing on that foot (which leads me to think he may have had the toe joint fused – we normally have patient’s stay off their feet for 8-12 weeks following a fusion). He expressed to Kelly on 1/16/13 that the pain was worse than childbirth – Kelly laughed and said he had no idea!
There are several treatments that help arthritis in the big toe joint. In addition to fusion, we can clean out the joint and create a new joint using a hemi-implant (Biopro implant). This treatment would allow the patient to walk more quickly than a fusion procedure.
In either case, do what Mark did and get your arthritis checked out!! Contact HFAA anytime for a consultation!!
