In Flight Magazine

Airlines have gotten pretty fancy these days. I even saw airplanes advertised with reclining seats that lie completely flat for sleeping, just like a bed! In addition to the on board snacks, refreshments, and the occasional movie, many travelers look forward to browsing through the in air magazine.

The magazine has particular and weird items for purchase ranging from movie memorabilia to the latest gadgets. No matter what issue of the in flight magazine you pick up your sure to find Harry Potter wands, Lord of the Rings rings, and gadgets you never knew you need before- like a robot window cleaner,  infrared laser or disinfection scanner. There are also a lot of outdoor equipment such as zombie statues for your yard and a floating golf game for your pool. One thing I am surprised to see more and more of  is foot care products.

There was literally 2 entire pages full of foot products.  I'm not just talking nail polishes or shoes, but treatment items for diseases! As a foot care specialist, I knew that nearly every single product listed was a joke and would not help conditions. For instance there were shoes and socks with posts to separate toes that claim to straighten hammertoes and realign your foot in a single week.  It's taken a lifetime to create your alignment and it takes more than a simple sock or shoe to realign it.  What really does work for foot alignment is custom made orthoses.  These custom inserts are crafted from your feet and are made to exactly fit your arch prescription.  Also note you cannot purchase custom orthotics online, in a catalog, or at a vending machine at the drug store. You have to have a custom fitting in a medical office, such as Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates, to achieve true realignment with orthotics.

Another comical item I ran across in the in air magazine was a 'bunion corrector'. This 'corrector' looked like a mid-evil torture device, but would not provide the desired outcome.  A bunion will not realign straight and the physical bunion bump will not vanish due to being stretched or padded, as this product was advertising. Honestly, a bunion will not be realigned unless surgery is performed. Here at HFAA we like to start with conservative options first including padding (to help with rubbing and irritation), supportive inserts, and/or topical medication.
