New, in office treatment for pain!

At Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates, we strive to be on the cutting edge of offering new technologies to help our patients. It’s in our mission statement – to provide comprehensive treatments with compassion, care, and excellence. So it just made sense for us to invest in a new technology for pain.

I see so many patients with acute and chronic foot and ankle pain. Typically it is for ‘overuse’ injuries, most commonly plantar fasciitis. Tendon problems are also extremely common and can be difficult to treat with traditional methods (addressing the inflammation and mechanics) due to the lack of blood flow to the tendons themselves. Basically, because of how a tendon’s anatomy functions, when they are torn or stretched too much they take longer to heal.

We have several “second lines of defense” when dealing with musculoskeletal pain. One new technology is utilizing laser (or light) therapy to break up the inflammation and tissues naturally without utilizing medications or steroids. It is our next step before discussing the need for several weeks of physical therapy to further repair the injured tendon or ligament.

Laser therapy works by utilizing wavelengths (in the infrared/ultraviolet categories) to penetrate deeply into tissue and break up scar adhesions. By breaking up these scars within a tendon or ligament, we allow the white blood cells and acute inflammation cells to come back in and actively repair these problems.

The benefits of utilizing laser therapy for pain are great – it is a pain free, in office procedure that can be repeated several times for maximum benefit. I recommend starting with 6 sessions to my patients, about 10-15 minutes per session. The laser sessions are spaced out every 3-5 days to maximize the benefits. Laser therapy is a wonderful alternative to other potentially harmful treatments and our main goal is to preclude any need for surgery to repair these musculoskeletal issues.
