Madonna, the Queen of Pop, was recently spotted working out on crutches after she hurt her foot while rehearsing a fierce dance routine. She confirmed the injury to E! News saying, “She bruised a bone in her foot from dancing in her high heels. She’ll be fine and off crutches in a week.”
As a podiatrist, I consider these types of injuries to be completely preventable, yet unavoidable in today’s society. You know I am a huge fan of Reality TV, and Dancing with the Stars in no exception. I am always very concerned when they are doing “fierce” dance routines while wearing sky high high heels. When you wear heels, your center of gravity is adjusted and your foot is not able to support your body weight in the way it was meant to. Your tendons and muscles are stretched and tightened, and an ankle or foot injury is much more common and can be quite severe.
If you do find that you are a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, a small heel with plenty of support is key to healthy feet and ankles during your routine. Ideally, you will only be doing Hip Hop and will be in tennis shoes, but if not, make sure that your foot and ankle are fully supported! And as always, if you were a dancing queen in high heels and are now a limping queen, give Heartland Foot and Ankle a call at 309.661.9975!
