Last weekend, NASCAR racing legend Tony Stewart crashed in a SPRINT car race and broke both his tibia and fibula bones. My husband, much more the car racing aficionado, has informed me of two interesting facts related to both the broken leg AND the rules of NASCAR:
1.) Shockingly, many race car drivers will not only continue to race with injuries like the one Tony suffered, but that they also are REVERED for getting back on the track so quickly. This is an unfortunate mistake. Not allowing your body to properly heal with RICE therapy (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and even surgery (which Tony DID get on Monday) will almost certainly lead to arthritis and other complications. It is critical that we ALL slow down and take care of ourselves when we are hurt!
2.) Most NASCAR drivers are forbidden to drive in other races due to the possibility of injury. There are accidents in race car driving. “That’s a fact, jack!” (By the way, Duck Dynasty is back on this week!) Tony got around this by forming his own racing team! A smart move for him as a driver, not so much as an owner who now doesn’t have as much of a chance in the ‘points race’ for the end of the season. Again, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of resting after an injury – it will get Tony and YOU back on the track (car or running!) a lot faster than fighting through the pain!
